Australian coach Norma Plummer is back in the Spar Proteas setup to help lead the national side to the upcoming Commonwealth Games as a mentor coach to Dorette Badenhorst and assistant Dumisani Chauke.
Nicole Cusack, who was Plummer’s assistant during her tenure as the Proteas coach, has been appointed the specialist shooting coach.
The Proteas gather in camp yesterday, following the end of the Telkom Netball League last weekend, and Plummer will work with the team to prepare for the upcoming matches, including the test match against Wales next month.
“Netball South Africa and Dorette herself had contacted me to see about coming in and just assisting, making sure things are on the right track and also help with selection,” explained Plummer.
“So, Nicole Cusack, who was my assistant coach with the Proteas previously at the World Cup, we’re both back and I just said to them that I’d be very happy to mentor Dorette.
“I won’t be sitting on the bench come games, I will be there but I will be up in the stands with the video analysis person because it’s very important that your own coaches get to actually experience coaching in pressure situations – you only learn by actually doing it.
“So, we’re going to do a fair bit of work prior to [the games] but then Nicole – because she’s a specialist shooting coach – will sit on the bench, so there’ll be Dumisani as well as Nicole and, of course, Dorette.
“But it’s more about just making sure that out in the stands… Sometimes when you go into some of the internationals and when coaches haven’t been au fait with what goes on there, you’ve got to be sort of schooled up on the what-ifs that could happen, and how do we handle that.”
