Marumo Gallants have confirmed the appointment of French coach Romain Folz as Dan Malesela’s replacement ahead of the 2022/23 DStv Premiership season.
Gallants parted ways with Malesela shortly after their Nedbank Cup final defeat to treble champions Mamelodi Sundowns last month, despite his promising hand in their attempt to defend their cup title.
Folz comes in to lead the side into their second successive CAF Confederation Cup run, thanks to their runners-up finish to Sundowns, who already qualified for the Champions League after winning a fifth successive domestic championship.
The Bordeaux-born tactician, 31, was previously on the books of Botswana Premier League side Township Rollers, whom he joined in December 2021, and also has experience on the continent having led Ghanaian side Ashanti Gold for a brief stint in 2021 after also guiding Bechem United in the same league in 2020.
The Limpopo outfit ended in 10th position in the 2021/22 league campaign, which was only their second in the top flight since taking over the status of Bidvest Wits.
“We welcome Coach Romain Folz to the team, he brings an impressive and energetic approach to football that we believe will be a great fit for Marumo Gallants,” said chairman Abram Sello in a press statement on Friday.
Folz, in his opening remarks, added: “I am very happy and honoured to join Marumo Gallants F.C. and a league such as the PSL. My first words are for our fans. I can only tell them that all the efforts and work we will put in every single day is for them. We want to make them proud, and I will dedicate all my time and energy to reach that goal.”
