Tottenham Hotspur coach Antonio Conte is wary of Southampton’s threat following the outcome of their last meeting but is excited to get things going in the 2022/23 Premier League season.

Spurs welcome Saints to the Tottenham Stadium to kick off their new campaign on Saturday afternoon, with the game set to be broadcast LIVE on SABC Sport.

Following last season’s results between the two sides, which saw Ralph Hasenhüttl’s charges take four points off the London side with a 1-1 draw and a drama-filled 3-2 win, this promises to be another exciting clash.

Conte, who enjoyed his first pre-season with the club since joining midway through the 2021/22 campaign, says his first priority is to make sure they don’t suffer the same fate this time around.

“My expectation is to have a different result than last season [laughs] – this is my first expectation. I hope so because of how we did against Southampton last season, we drew away and lost at home,” Conte told the media in his MD-1 press conference.

“This season, we are talking about a team that is a really good team, with a good manager and we have to pay great attention. But at the same time, we want to try to start in the best possible way, to try and get three points.

“We are playing in our stadium, it’s the first game [of the new season] and we’ll see our fans again, so it will be exciting for the players and me to play again and go into the new season.”

Build-up for the encounter is set for 15:00 on SABC 3, with kick-off scheduled for 16:00 (SA time).
