Bafana Bafana and SuperSport United skipper, Ronwen Willliams has suffered an injury blow that could force him to miss the national team’s opening 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier next month.

The goalkeeper was taken off just before the hour mark during his club’s DStv Premiership clash against Marumo Gallants last Saturday and did not feature at all when Matsatsantsa played to another goalless draw – this time against Stellenbosch FC on Tuesday night.

Williams is now officially racing to be available when Bafana begin their qualification route to the continental tournament to be held in Ivory Coast.
“He is having a follow-up with the surgeon on Thursday and we will see from there,” SuperSport CEO, Stan Matthews, confirmed to SABC Sport.

“We won’t be taking any chances with him but he may be able to make the Pirates match and looks good for his Bafana duties. We will know more by Thursday.”

Bafana were drawn in Group K alongside Zimbabwe, Morocco and Liberia, and the first round of matches has been scheduled for June.
