The South African senior women’s team (Banyana Banyana) and Sporting Gijon midfielder Kholosa Biyana believes preparation and application will be key for Banyana Banyana ahead of the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations to be hosted by Morocco in July.
Banyana Banyana were thumped 5-1 by the Netherlands women’s team in an international friendly encounter at the Carls Jean Stadion on Tuesday 12 April in a match that coach Desiree Ellis has describe as good challenge for the players mentally and physically and it was what the technical staff needed to see in order to improve (As per www.safa.net).
Despite a major improvement for Banyana Banyana in recent years, Ellis charges are yet to clinch the AWCON trophy after making it to the finals on five occasions (1995, 2000, 2010, 2012 and 2018).
Banyana Banyana have a busy schedule that will require a lot of preparation and sacrifices with three major sporting events on the cards; 2022 AWCON, 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and 2023 Olympics.
27 year-old Biyana who holds 29 Caps for the women’s national team maintains that looking at previous games and listening to coaches will be important for improvement, preparation and learning.
“Playing Netherlands is more than just a friendly. Our eyes are set on doing well at AWCON, and going to the world cup so preparation and application will be very important for us.” Biyana told www.sabcsport.com
“If you want to become better you must constantly look at previous performances and such games are important for us to learn as a team and test out different combinations.” Added Biyana.
