Wrestling fraternity reeling from death of Crombrinck

South Africa’s wrestling fraternity is still reeling from the sudden and tragic death of one of their brightest star Kleinjan Crombrinck.

Combrinck, who was a member of Team South Africa at the recent Commonwealth Games on Australia’s Gold Coast, died in a car accident in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Combrinck was the reigning African champion in the men’s freestyle wrestling 57 kilogram division, and he came agonisingly close to a medal at this year’s Commonwealth Games.

Combrinck, and fellow Commonwealth Games wrestler, Michael Gaitskill were involved in an accident between Springs and Nigel on Gauteng’s East Rand.

Twenty three-year-old Crombrinck was killed while Gaitskill is still in critical condition in the intensive care unit at a Springs hospital.

Based in Richards Bay in KwaZulu-Natal, Combrinck was a regular visitor to the East Rand for training purposes as the duo were preparing for the U23 World Championships later this year.
