Chester Williams to be laid to rest on Saturday

Chester Williams

Former Springbok and Western Cape rugby player, Chester Williams, will receive a special provincial official funeral on Saturday at the Newlands Rugby Stadium.

The national flag will also fly at half-mast in his honour from sunrise to sunset.

Chester Williams is best known for playing in the Springbok rugby team which won the 1995 Rugby World Cup.  For many years, he also played rugby for Western Province.

After he hung up his boots, he shaped the lives of many young players through the Chester Williams Rugby Foundation.

Western Cape Premier, Alan Winde says Williams’ contribution to sport and transformation in the country and in the province has been immense and for this reason, they made a request to the Presidency for a special provincial official funeral.

This request was agreed to by President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Members of the public are encouraged to attend the funeral service at Newlands Stadium.  Gates open at 10am and the service starts at noon.
