Farouk Khan wowed by Eastern Cape football talent

Former Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns assistant coach Farouk Khan says there’s a need for coaches to share knowledge to the benefit of football development in the country.

Khan was speaking at the inaugural Ulwazi Super 8 schools tournament in Butterworth in the Eastern Cape on Sunday.

The renowned youth coach spent the weekend watching Ulwazi schools tournament which is the brainchild of Premier Soccer League (PSL) Head of Communications and Media, Luxolo September.

Khan says there’s also a need for South Africans who can help to improve conditions at the lower levels of the game to play their part.

Khan this past weekend also held a two-day coaching workshop with a group of about 40 coaches some of whom were teachers coming from the schools involved in this tournament.  He was very impressed with the response of these coaches.

The tournament was won by Xolilizwe Senior Secondary School from Willowvale beating Ndabankulu Senior Secondary School on penalties in the final. Former PSL general manager and FIFA referee Andile “Ace” Ncobo comes from this area and has hailed this tournament.

Khan’s Stars of Africa Academy is one the best in country and has produced Bafana Bafana star players like Tokelo Rantie, May Mahlangu, Luther Singh and many more who have gone on to play for top European teams. He’s confirmed that player of the tournament Zusakhe Mqikela from the winning school will spend a month at his academy.

Former South African U23 international and Bush Bucks midfielder Mzunani “Maradona” Mgwigwi also attended this tournament; he’s currently active in the footballing structures in the province and sees this schools tournament as a good initiative.

The tournament covered about six towns and its surrounding villages in the Amathole Region and following a good start, September, whose Ulwazi project is also focused on education and youth empowerment, together with his fellow board member says the plan is to continue with this tournament. – Report by Velile Mnyandu
